Recently, Kristen asked, “How can I afford pet sitting employees without ending in a financial crisis?”
This is a super question and very relevant in many business owners minds. After all, if you start giving away all your work, you are left with next to nothing, right? Wrong.
I always advise business owners to make a TRANSITION in order to afford pet sitting employees. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your staff. So what does that look like? Glad you asked!
Glad you asked!
Determine if you can afford pet sitting employees
Where are your prices? What are your expenses? What is your profit margin and how much are you really making? If your profit margin is 30% or less, in my opinion, you can’t afford pet sitting employees. After all, you still have to pay yourself.

Boost up your marketing efforts
Time to kick it into high gear. At first, it is going to be a very big balancing act. You need to give up a small part of your business so that you can get your new staff’s feet wet. It works out great because you don’t want to overwhelm them, but still “test the waters” A great way to do this is to boost your networking efforts by having successful booths at events!
All new clients who come into your business, you give to your new pet sitting employee
Let them take on the new clients and then you can keep the old. This works really well for all involved. Think about it. Your new clients aren’t “missing” you because you were never their pet sitter.
It is really as easy as that. Find the right people (people who want supplemental income), and introduce them right to your clients and everything will be great!
I understand that hiring staff and figuring out if you can afford pet sitting employees can be scary. But most fear comes from the unknown. I really believe if you can define the unknown and get the answers you need, your fear can be eliminated. Why not eliminate that fear by taking my Employee Quick Start Course? For example, Lesson 4 teaches you how to slide into the managerial role and introduce your clients to your staff in a way that they don’t have a mental breakdown! 🙂
Thanks Bella for this post. Definitely a scary leap, but the only way to scale and thrive in a growing business is to hire! I can only be in one place at one time and the burn out is REAL!!
